WEB DESK: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday congratulated Spain on winning the FIFA World Cup 2026 after their 1-0 victory over Argentina in the final, describing the triumph as well deserved and praising the team’s outstanding performances throughout the tournament.

In a post on X, the prime minister commended Spain for displaying exceptional skill, unity, discipline and teamwork during the competition, saying the national side had earned the world title through consistent excellence.

PM Shehbaz also congratulated US President Donald Trump and the American people for the successful organisation of the tournament, praising the exceptional arrangements made by the United States.

He further acknowledged the governments and people of Mexico and Canada for their partnership in co-hosting the FIFA World Cup, saying the three countries had successfully staged one of the world’s biggest sporting events.

The prime minister also appreciated FIFA President Gianni Infantino and the governing body’s team for organising the tournament, describing it as another milestone in the global growth of football.

He said the World Cup had once again demonstrated that sport is a universal language capable of transcending borders, bringing nations together and inspiring people across the world.

Expressing hope that the values of friendship, unity and mutual respect displayed during the tournament would continue beyond the competition, PM Shehbaz said the spirit of the World Cup should serve as a source of inspiration for the international community.

Meanwhile, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif also congratulated Spain on their World Cup victory, noting the country’s support for Palestine.

Spain secured their second FIFA World Cup title by defeating defending champions Argentina 1-0 after extra time in the final, bringing the month-long tournament hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada to a close.
