KARACHI: Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab on Tuesday inaugurated an urban forest project along Shahrah-e-Bhutto and the EBM Causeway.

He said that 10,000 trees have already been planted under a drive aimed at improving the city’s environment and air quality.

Wahab said the tree plantation campaign has been accelerated as part of efforts to tackle rising environmental challenges and reduce air pollution in Pakistan’s largest city, Karachi.

He said the urban forest initiative would serve as an important milestone in improving Karachi’s environmental conditions and increasing oxygen levels in the city.

“We are planting trees to improve oxygen levels in Karachi,” he said while addressing the inauguration ceremony.

The mayor said the project would help mitigate the impacts of climate change and contribute to making the city greener through practical on-ground interventions.

He added that plantation of neem, gulmohar and other seasonal tree species is ongoing along Shahrah-e-Bhutto as part of a phased development plan.

Wahab said the urban forest would also create a more natural habitat for birds and wildlife in the area.

According to him, the plantation drive will be completed in phases as part of broader urban greening efforts across the city.
