ISLAMABAD: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held a telephone conversation with Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir to discuss the latest regional developments and matters of mutual interest, Iranian state media reported on Thursday.
According to Iranian reports, the conversation took place on Wednesday while Araghchi was in Beijing. The Iranian foreign ministry said the two officials exchanged views on regional developments and issues of mutual interest but provided no further details about the discussion.
The call came amid heightened tensions across the region, including the intensifying conflict in Yemen, increased Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia and growing concerns over the security of key maritime routes.
Houthi attacks intensify
Houthi forces have recently expanded their military activity along Yemen’s Red Sea coast and made territorial gains near the strategically important Bab el-Mandeb Strait, according to Reuters. The group has also intensified attacks on Saudi territory and energy infrastructure.
The developments have increased concerns over the security of the Bab el-Mandeb, one of the world’s key maritime chokepoints linking the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden.
The Houthis have also reportedly strengthened their military capabilities during the latest fighting, while Saudi Arabia has sought greater regional support as the conflict puts additional pressure on its security and energy infrastructure.
The escalation has also contributed to a worsening humanitarian situation in Yemen, with the United Nations reporting that more than 100,000 people have been displaced by the renewed fighting.
Pakistan’s diplomatic engagement
The conversation between Araghchi and Munir comes as Pakistan continues diplomatic consultations aimed at preventing further escalation in the region.
Islamabad has maintained contacts with Iran and other regional countries amid the wider conflict, while Pakistani officials have repeatedly stressed the importance of dialogue and de-escalation.
The latest discussion also follows growing international concern over disruptions to major maritime routes, including the Bab el-Mandeb and Strait of Hormuz, both of which are important for regional trade and global energy supplies.
No details were immediately released regarding any specific proposals or decisions discussed by Araghchi and Munir during the call.
Wider regional tensions
Araghchi was in Beijing for diplomatic consultations with Chinese officials as regional tensions continued to escalate. During his visit, he also held a separate telephone conversation with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan.
The Iranian foreign minister’s talks in Beijing focused on the evolving regional situation and diplomatic efforts to address the conflict.
The latest Pakistan-Iran contact underscores continued consultations between Islamabad and Tehran as developments in Yemen, Saudi Arabia and other parts of the region create additional security and diplomatic challenges.
