KARACHI: At least five people were killed and two others injured on Friday when a dilapidated wall of a government school collapsed in Karachi’s Orangi Town, police said.

The incident occurred near a government school at Block L football ground in the Mominabad area, according to police.

A spokesperson for the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) West said seven people were trapped under the debris after the old wall collapsed. Five of them died, while two others sustained injuries.

The bodies and injured were shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, while rescue teams took part in relief operations at the site.

According to initial information shared by police, the victims were allegedly attempting to remove steel rods from the old school wall when it suddenly collapsed.

Police said the deceased and injured were reportedly drug addicts and were allegedly trying to extract steel rods from the dilapidated structure when the accident occurred.

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah expressed grief over the loss of lives and directed the authorities to ensure immediate medical treatment for the injured.

The chief minister also sought a detailed report into the incident and directed the relevant authorities to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the wall collapse.
