LEEDS: England thrashed Pakistan by an innings and 103 runs in the first Test at Headingley on Saturday, giving Joe Root a winning start to his second spell as permanent captain.
England added 43 runs to their overnight total to reach 409 and secure a first-innings lead of 238 before their pace attack dismantled Pakistan’s batting lineup.
Pakistan were bowled out for 135 in just 37.3 overs, with Mohammad Rizwan top-scoring with 41.
Josh Tongue took 3-43 and Ollie Robinson 3-29 in Pakistan’s second innings, while both finished with career-best match figures of eight wickets.
Pakistan suffered an early setback when Imam-ul-Haq was dismissed without scoring in the second over. Azan Awais and Saud Shakeel soon followed, while Shan Masood’s 29 was ended by Tongue.
Salman Ali Agha was dismissed lbw after briefly preventing Tongue from completing a hat-trick.
Robinson then removed Ali Usman and Khurram Shahzad before Jofra Archer dismissed Mohammad Abbas to complete England’s emphatic victory.
Joe Root also claimed his 219th Test catch, moving ahead of Australia’s Steve Smith for the most catches by a non-wicketkeeper in Test cricket.
The defeat highlighted the gap between the two sides’ seam attacks, batting performances in English conditions and fielding standards.
Pakistan will look to bounce back in the second Test at Lord’s on Thursday, with Babar Azam expected to return after recovering from a finger injury.
