CALIFORNIA: California has formally recognised Eidul Fitr and Eidul Azha in state law, allowing workers to use existing paid leave to observe the Islamic holidays and encouraging schools and public workplaces to accommodate those celebrating them.

Assembly Bill 2017, signed into law on September 10, recognises the two religious festivals in state statute and provides schools and public workplaces with tools to support people observing the occasions.

The legislation was introduced by Assembly member Matt Haney in partnership with Muslim communities and organisations.

“California is home to one of the largest and most vibrant Muslim communities in the country, and their traditions deserve recognition and respect,” Haney said in a statement.

He said formal recognition of Eid in state law would help Californians celebrate the holidays with their families without having to make unnecessary sacrifices.

Supporters said the legislation would help reduce academic and workplace barriers faced by students and employees observing the religious festivals by encouraging institutions to make appropriate accommodations.

“By formally recognising Eidul Fitr and Eidul Azha, our state affirms the cultural significance of these observances while giving schools and public workplaces practical tools to support those who celebrate them,” Commission Chair Jason Paguio said in a statement.

The law provides formal recognition of the two major Islamic festivals while allowing employees to use existing paid leave arrangements to observe them. It also aims to promote greater awareness of Muslim religious traditions and facilitate accommodation in educational and public workplace settings.
