DHAKA: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairman and Prime Minister-elect Tarique Rahman has delivered a wide-ranging victory speech, declaring the party’s return to power as a triumph for democracy and the people of Bangladesh.

Addressing citizens and journalists at home and abroad, Rahman said the election result marked the restoration of freedom and voting rights after more than a decade of authoritarian rule.
“This victory belongs to Bangladesh. This victory belongs to democracy,” he said, congratulating the public for overcoming obstacles to pave the way for democratic governance.

Rahman acknowledged that the incoming government faces major challenges, including a fragile economy, weakened institutions, and a deteriorating law and order situation. He urged national unity to prevent any return of autocracy and to safeguard the country’s sovereignty.

He extended congratulations to all political parties that took part in the election, stressing that both government and opposition must play responsible roles for democracy to become institutionalised.

Rahman also praised the interim government, Election Commission, judiciary, administration, armed forces, law enforcement agencies, and election officials for ensuring what he called a free, fair, and credible vote. He recognised the role of domestic and international media observers in strengthening electoral integrity.

Paying tribute to those martyred or injured in Bangladesh’s long struggle for democracy, Rahman expressed deep respect and prayed for their forgiveness.

He reiterated BNP’s commitment to its “31-point agenda” and pledged to gradually implement all promises made in the election manifesto.

Rahman also remembered former prime minister Khaleda Zia, saying her absence was deeply felt at a moment of democratic victory, and praised her lifelong resistance against authoritarianism.

Calling on BNP supporters to remain calm and vigilant, Rahman warned against post-election unrest and stressed that peace and order must be maintained at all costs.

“No wrongdoing or unlawful activity will be tolerated,” he said, adding that justice and the rule of law would guide the new administration, with equal enforcement of law for every citizen regardless of political or social background.

Concluding his address, Tarique Rahman sought cooperation from all groups in building a safe, humane, and democratic Bangladesh, ending with the message: “Long live Bangladesh. Long live BNP.”
