Islamabad: The federal capital administration on Friday fixed the Sugar price at Rs172 per kilogram, amid rising public complaints over surging rates and market manipulation.
According to a notification issued by Deputy Commissioner Irfan Nawaz Memon, the ex-mill sugar price has been set at Rs165 per kg, while the maximum retail price for consumers has been capped at Rs172 per kg.
The notification warned that strict legal action would be taken against retailers found selling sugar above the notified rates. Assistant commissioners have been directed to ensure compliance and launch crackdowns on profiteers and hoarders.
Residents have been advised to purchase sugar only at the officially declared prices and report any violations to the district administration.
The price control move comes just days after the federal government reached an agreement with sugar industry representatives, setting the ex-mill price at Rs165 per kg in an attempt to stabilise the market.
Currently, sugar is being sold for up to Rs200 per kg in various parts of the country, prompting concern from consumers and government officials alike. Authorities have attributed the inflated prices to the actions of what is widely referred to as the “sugar mafia” — influential industry players accused of hoarding stocks and creating artificial shortages.
