Roger Binny steps down as BCCI president

NEW DELHI: Roger Binny has resigned as president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) after turning 70, the maximum age limit allowed under the board’s constitution, Indian media reported on Thursday.

Binny, who celebrated his 70th birthday on July 19, was ineligible to continue as an office-bearer under BCCI rules. Vice-president Rajeev Shukla has assumed charge as interim president until fresh elections are conducted.

According to reports, Roger Binny did not attend a key meeting on sponsorship deals for the upcoming Asia Cup, which Shukla chaired in his acting capacity. The BCCI General Council is scheduled to convene next month to elect a new chief.

The development comes amid uncertainty in Indian cricket governance following the passage of the Sports Governance Act, which raises the retirement age for sports officials from 70 to 75 years. However, the new law has yet to be enforced and does not automatically override BCCI’s existing constitution.

“The law has been passed, but unless it is adopted in the BCCI constitution, the 70-year cap stays,” a sports law analyst told Indian media.

Binny, a member of India’s 1983 World Cup-winning squad, became BCCI president in October 2022. His tenure included preparations for the 2023 ODI World Cup hosted by India and negotiations over the Asia Cup.

Shukla’s interim leadership comes at a time of debate over governance reforms in Indian sports. Critics argue frequent leadership changes disrupt continuity, while proponents say age and term limits ensure accountability and fresh perspectives.

BCCI elections are expected to take place in September, according to local media reports.
