LAHORE: The Punjab government has reinstated lifetime family pensions for widows and unmarried daughters of deceased government employees, reversing a decision made last year to limit the benefit to 10 years.
A notification issued by the provincial finance department said amendments to the Punjab Civil Service Pension Rules would now allow beneficiaries to receive pensions for life.
Under the revised rules, pensions will be equally divided among multiple widows, but the facility will cease if any widow remarries.

The move, approved earlier by the provincial cabinet led by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, restores the facility withdrawn under last year’s pension reforms, which were aimed at reducing the state’s growing pension burden.
Those reforms had capped family pension at 10 years, extended the Special Family Pension to 25 years, and allowed disabled children of deceased employees to receive pensions for life.
