LAHORE: The Punjab Mines and Minerals Bill 2025 was tabled in the Punjab Assembly on Tuesday, introducing a detailed regulatory framework aimed at reforming the province’s mining sector and cracking down on illegal extraction activities.

Under the proposed law, a Licensing Authority will be established to oversee the issuance, suspension, and termination of mining licenses. The bill also calls for the creation of a Mining and Minerals Force, empowered to prevent unlawful mining operations across Punjab. Headed by the Director General, the uniformed force will have arrest powers, and dedicated Mining Police Stations will be set up to support enforcement.

To ensure swift justice, special courts will handle mining-related cases, with appeals to be heard by the Sessions Court. The legislation also envisions an Exploration Promotion Division, tasked with building a comprehensive geological database to encourage investment and exploration.

The Mines and Minerals bill further outlines transparent bidding procedures, strict fines, and penalties for violations while proposing to repeal outdated mining laws once the new framework takes effect.

Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz met with US Consul General Stetson Sanders in Lahore and invited American investors to explore the province’s vast mineral and tourism potential. She highlighted Punjab’s cultural richness and growing role as a hub for global tourism, trade, and technology.

The Consul General commended Punjab’s pro-investment policies and the province’s e-business initiative, saying it would enhance transparency and stimulate economic growth across the region.
