ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) achieved a clean sweep in the recent by-elections, winning all six National Assembly seats. With these gains, PML-N now holds 132 seats, making it the largest party in the Assembly.
This result means PML-N no longer needs to rely on the Pakistan People’s Party to secure a simple majority. With the support of smaller allied parties, PML-N now commands 170 members in the 336-seat National Assembly—just one more than the 169 needed for a simple majority.
The alliance that brings PML-N to this majority includes MQM (22 seats), PML-Q (5), Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (4), PML-Z (1), BAP (1), National Party (1), and four independent members.
Despite having 74 seats, the PPP is no longer essential for PML-N to push through its legislative agenda, because the party can now rely on its smaller coalition partners for lawmaking.
