27th constitutional amendment

The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has convened a meeting of its Central Executive Committee (CEC) on November 6 to discuss and formulate the party’s stance on the proposed 27th Constitutional Amendment.

PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari revealed in a post on X that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has sought the party’s support for the passage of the amendment. He said that a delegation of PML-N, led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, recently met with President Asif Ali Zardari and himself to discuss the proposed changes.

Bilawal Bhutto stated that the CEC meeting was called following the President’s return from Doha, and the party would make its decision after detailed deliberations.

Explaining the contents of the proposed amendment, Bilawal said it includes provisions for:

  • the establishment of a Constitutional Court,
  • the restoration of executive magistrates,
  • granting powers for the transfer of judges,
  • amendments to Article 243,
  • changes that could end the provincial share protection in the NFC Award, and
  • proposals to return powers of education and population planning to the federation.

He added that the amendment also seeks to resolve the ongoing deadlock over appointments to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

The PPP chairman said the party will thoroughly examine the proposed 27th constitutional amendment during the upcoming meeting before announcing its official position.
