ISLAMABAD: Israel has deported 171 detainees from the Global Sumud Flotilla, including prominent climate activist Greta Thunberg, sending them to Greece and Slovakia, officials confirmed on Monday. However, uncertainty remains over the status of Pakistan’s former senator Mushtaq Ahmad, who was also part of the Gaza aid mission.
According to Israeli authorities, the deported individuals have already been flown to their respective destinations. But there was no clarity on whether Mushtaq Ahmad was among them.
The Foreign Office (FO) in Islamabad confirmed that Mushtaq Ahmad remains in Israeli custody and that Pakistan is actively working for his release.

In an official statement, the FO spokesperson said diplomatic efforts are being pursued through Pakistan’s embassy in Oman and in coordination with international partners. The spokesperson expressed gratitude to the Jordanian government for its “exemplary cooperation and support” in facilitating the process.
He further reassured that Mushtaq Ahmad is “safe and sound” in detention and is expected to be produced before a local court under Israeli legal procedures. Once a deportation order is issued, Pakistan hopes to secure his swift repatriation.
The Global Sumud Flotilla was part of an international civil mission aimed at delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza. The detention and deportation of activists — including high-profile figures — has drawn global attention, with Islamabad now intensifying diplomatic pressure to ensure the safe return of its national.
