ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and the Afghan Taliban regime on Wednesday agreed to a 48-hour ceasefire, starting 6pm today, following days of cross-border fighting. The truce was reached on the Taliban’s request, the Foreign Office said.

Earlier, Pakistan carried out precision strikes in Kandahar and Kabul, destroying multiple Taliban battalion headquarters and leadership centres of India-backed groups. Security sources said the targets were carefully selected away from civilian areas.

The ceasefire follows deadly border skirmishes in Chaman’s Spin Boldak and Kurram, where Pakistani forces killed around 50 militants, destroyed eight posts, and knocked out six tanks after foiling coordinated attacks by Afghan Taliban and Fitna al-Khawarij elements.

ISPR said the Taliban’s assault included the destruction of the Pakistan–Afghan Friendship Gate, terming it a violation of tribal customs and cross-border trade norms. The military reaffirmed Pakistan’s resolve to respond to any act of aggression while stressing constructive dialogue for peace.
