KU female student dies in campus bus accident

KARACHI: A University of Karachi (KU) student, Aniqa Saeed, lost her life on Friday after being hit by a campus bus, police said.

Saeed, a second-year student of the Department of Social Work, was struck while getting off the bus and succumbed to her injuries at hospital. Police confirmed the driver was taken into custody, though the family declined to pursue legal action.

The accident sparked grief and protests on campus, with students demanding improved transport safety and greater accountability from the administration.

Sindh Minister for Universities and Boards Ismail Rahoo called the death tragic and ordered a formal inquiry, while Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori also took notice and directed the vice chancellor to submit a report. Both officials extended condolences to the bereaved family.

The KU administration expressed sorrow over the incident, with Vice Chancellor Professor Khalid Mahmood Iraqi visiting the victim’s family and suspending the bus driver. A four-member inquiry committee, led by Department of Criminology Chairperson Professor Naima Saeed, has been formed to investigate the circumstances and recommend preventive measures.
