Islamabad: In a major step towards curbing air pollution and promoting environmental sustainability, the Islamabad Transport Authority (ITA) has officially launched Pakistan’s first-ever Vehicle Emission Testing System (VETS), beginning with on-ground inspections in the capital.
According to ITA officials, a vehicle emission testing camp was set up at D-Chowk where citizens turned out in large numbers to get their vehicles inspected. The initiative was met with a positive response, with many appreciating the importance of clean emissions and vehicle maintenance.
Initially, the campaign has focused on inspecting vehicles belonging to government departments. However, authorities have now extended the inspection process to all private vehicles in the city as part of the second phase of the rollout.

“Vehicles that pass the inspection are being issued clearance stickers on-site,” said Irfan Memon, Chairman of the Islamabad Transport Authority. “With the help of modern equipment, we aim to expand this system across the city to ensure cleaner air and better vehicle standards,” he added.
Memon further urged the public to actively participate in the initiative. “We request all citizens to have their vehicles inspected. Failure to comply, especially in terms of post-inspection maintenance, will lead to strict action,” he warned.
A joint crackdown with Islamabad Traffic Police is also on the cards for vehicles found without clearance stickers.
Officials said the campaign is not only aimed at reducing vehicular emissions but also at creating long-term awareness about environmental responsibility and road safety.
