ISLAMABAD: The Government of Pakistan on Monday announced a sweeping crackdown against fake news networks following the recent TLP incident, vowing strict action under cybercrime and national security laws.
According to officials, a list of key actors behind the disinformation campaign has been prepared, with cases to be registered under PCCIA provisions. FIA’s Cybercrime Wing and special enforcement units have been tasked with immediate arrests.
The state’s Deepfake Lab has also activated forensic checks of fabricated videos and audio clips, while social media platforms have been formally notified to remove fake content within 24 hours. Repeat violations may lead to permanent suspension of accounts.
Authorities have warned the public that even sharing unverified clips could invite legal action. Hate-driven fake news targeting state institutions will face zero-tolerance.

Overseas networks involved in spreading fabricated content are also under scrutiny, with embassies preparing legal and diplomatic steps, including the option of Red Notices through international cooperation.
Meanwhile, TV channels, vloggers, and digital platforms have been instructed to carry out double verification before airing any content. Troll cells, misleading hashtags, and financial facilitators of fake news are now prime targets of a “coordinated operation,” officials added.
A government helpline (1919) has been activated for reporting fake news, assuring whistleblowers their identity will remain confidential.
