ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Gilgit-Baltistan has announced that general elections in Gilgit-Baltistan will be held on June 7, setting the stage for a fresh political contest in the mountainous region.
Polling for the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly will take place across the territory on the scheduled date, officials confirmed, adding that a revised election schedule will be issued soon.
The development follows the dissolution of the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly on November 24, 2025. Elections were initially planned for January 24, 2026, but were postponed due to severe winter conditions that made voting logistics difficult in the region.

The upcoming polls will mark the fourth election since the introduction of the Gilgit-Baltistan Empowerment and Self-Governance Order 2009, which granted the region a degree of political autonomy.
Under this framework, the Pakistan Peoples Party formed the first regional government. In 2015, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz came to power, with Hafiz Hafeezur Rehman completing a full term.
The 2020 elections brought the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf into government. However, political shifts followed the disqualification of then-chief minister Khalid Khurshid, after which a like-minded group took over and completed the tenure in November 2025.
The announcement paves the way for renewed political activity in the strategically significant region, with parties expected to gear up for campaigning in the coming weeks.
