Rawalpindi: In a concerning development, unidentified individuals have stolen six batteries from a Flood alert System installed on Nullah Lai, near Pirwadhai Bridge, disrupting the system’s connection with the control room.
A case regarding the theft has been registered at the Ganjmandi Police Station on the complaint of the Flood Control In-charge.
According to the FIR, the theft came to light when the warning post suddenly lost contact with the central control room, prompting an inspection visit by officials. Upon arrival, it was discovered that six batteries powering the flood warning system had been stolen.

The stolen equipment was part of a Japanese-funded flood alert system, handed over to the Rawalpindi Municipal Corporation in 2004, along with six batteries. Officials noted that the same set of batteries had been in continuous use for over 21 years.
It is pertinent to mention that in 2023, an entire flood monitoring unit — also provided by Japan — was stolen from Katarian, which had been entrusted to the Pakistan Meteorological Department.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the latest theft and are working to restore the system ahead of the ongoing monsoon season.
