Hazara Motorway

GILGIT: At least five people were killed when a passenger car travelling from Gilgit to Islamabad collided with a speeding dumper near Havelian on the Hazara Motorway late Monday night, police said.

According to Havelian police, the dumper rammed into the car at high speed, leaving all five passengers dead on the spot. Rescue teams reached the site shortly after the accident and shifted the bodies to a nearby hospital.

An official from POF Havelian Cantt police station said the deceased were residents of Gilgit-Baltistan, while efforts were under way to confirm their identities. Additional Moharir Touqeer added that the victims included two women and three men. Locals believe the Hazara Motorway accident may have been caused by brake failure of the dumper.

Police have taken the dumper driver into custody and launched an investigation.

The tragedy comes days after another dumper accident in Abbottabad, where a speeding vehicle ran over eight schoolchildren near the FBR office, killing three and critically injuring five. The incident had sparked protests on the Karakoram Highway, highlighting growing concerns over reckless driving and poor regulation of heavy vehicles. Official data shows that nearly 500 people lost their lives in dumper and tanker accidents across Pakistan in 2024.
