The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Tuesday unanimously adopted a resolution proposed by Pakistan, emphasizing the importance of resolving international disputes through peaceful means. The resolution received full support from all member states, underlining a global commitment to diplomacy and conflict prevention.
Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Ishaq Dar, chaired the UNSC session, which was convened under the theme “Promoting International Peace and Security through Multilateralism and the Peaceful Settlement of Disputes.” This session marked the first of two key events led by Pakistan during its presidency of the Council in July.
The resolution calls upon nations to fully utilize established mechanisms for peaceful dispute resolution. These include negotiation, mediation, arbitration, judicial settlement, and other non-violent means of addressing conflicts, in line with the principles of the United Nations Charter.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the adoption of this resolution is a significant diplomatic achievement. It contributes meaningfully to global peace and security by promoting preventive diplomacy and reinforcing peaceful conflict resolution frameworks.

The resolution is grounded in Chapter VI of the UN Charter, which outlines the peaceful settlement of disputes. It urges all UN member states to prioritize peaceful measures when addressing international conflicts and to strengthen existing dispute-resolution systems.
Additionally, the resolution encourages both member states and the UN itself to adopt timely and effective diplomatic strategies to prevent conflicts from escalating. These may include mediation efforts, confidence-building measures, and facilitating dialogues at various levels — international, regional, and subregional.
It also highlights the critical role of regional and subregional organizations in maintaining peace, calling for stronger cooperation between these bodies and the United Nations to ensure coordinated and effective conflict resolution.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also addressed the Security Council during this session. He expressed deep concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, describing it as an unprecedented level of destruction and suffering in recent years. Guterres warned that the escalation of Israeli military operations had pushed Gaza’s humanitarian system to the brink of collapse, with devastation compounding an already dire situation.
