ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has clarified that Iran’s ballistic missile programme is not part of the Islamabad memorandum of understanding signed between Tehran and Washington, saying the issue was never included in the negotiations.

Speaking alongside Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian during a delegation-level meeting, the prime minister said there should be no double standards on ballistic missile capabilities, adding that Iran has the same right as other countries to develop such systems.

He said the MoU reached between Iran and the United States does not mention ballistic missiles in any form because the subject was not on the agenda of the talks.

Shehbaz Sharif cautioned against what he described as attempts by “spoilers” to misrepresent the agreement and create confusion around the peace process.

He stressed that it would be unfair for some countries to possess ballistic missiles while denying Iran the same right, and urged observers not to misinterpret the contents of the MoU.

The prime minister reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to continuing its mediation role between Iran and the United States, saying Islamabad would remain engaged until a lasting and honourable peace is achieved.

He praised the resilience of the Iranian leadership and people and appreciated their patience during a difficult regional period.

Shehbaz Sharif also commended Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir for his contribution to securing the ceasefire and facilitating the signing of the Islamabad MoU, while acknowledging the support of friendly countries including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Egypt.

He warned that continued conflict could expand into a wider regional war, stressing that Pakistan would do everything possible to prevent further escalation and promote dialogue.

Following the meeting, the prime minister and Iranian president jointly addressed a press conference, reaffirming their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and advancing regional peace.

Shehbaz Sharif said his talks with President Pezeshkian were highly productive and expressed gratitude to Iran for trusting Pakistan’s mediation efforts, adding that Iran’s success was also Pakistan’s success.

President Pezeshkian said Iran and Pakistan share deep historical, cultural and religious ties, and described the relationship as unique and based on a shared future and destiny.

He thanked Pakistan for its support during recent developments and praised Islamabad’s role in promoting peace and stability in the region, saying the Islamabad MoU reflected Iran’s confidence in Pakistan’s mediation efforts.

He also held separate meetings with President Asif Ali Zardari and Field Marshal Asim Munir during his visit, where bilateral relations and regional issues were discussed.
