Pakistan, Egypt agree to deepen political, economic and defence cooperation

ISLAMABAD: Egyptian Foreign Minister Dr Badr Abdelatty concluded a two-day official visit to Pakistan from 29 to 30 November, during which both sides reviewed the full spectrum of bilateral relations, the Foreign Office said on Sunday.

According to the spokesperson, Dr Abdelatty held one-on-one and delegation-level talks with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar. The discussions covered political, economic, trade and defence cooperation, as well as health-sector collaboration.

Pakistan acknowledged Egypt’s support in health initiatives, particularly assistance in combating hepatitis C. Both sides also agreed to strengthen private-sector engagement, deciding to identify 250 Pakistani business houses in the first phase and 500 in the second.

The two foreign ministers agreed to establish a Pakistan–Egypt Business Council, while the Pakistan–Egypt Business Forum will be convened in Cairo in the second quarter of 2026, coinciding with the next Joint Ministerial Commission (JMC) meeting. The JMC will be co-chaired by the two foreign ministers.

To activate institutional mechanisms, senior officials from both countries will meet in the first quarter of 2026.

The Foreign Office noted that Al-Azhar University also announced it would double scholarship opportunities for Pakistani students.

Pakistan appreciated Egypt’s diplomatic efforts toward a ceasefire and humanitarian relief in Gaza. Both sides reaffirmed their support for an independent and sovereign State of Palestine.

During the visit, the Egyptian foreign minister also called on President Asif Ali Zardari, who expressed Pakistan’s desire to further strengthen historic ties with Egypt and commended Cairo’s role on the Gaza crisis.

Dr Abdelatty also met Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir, with discussions focused on defence cooperation, training exchanges and regional security. Both sides agreed to maintain high-level military contacts.

Additionally, the Egyptian foreign minister held interactions with the Pakistani business community, highlighting broad opportunities for enhanced trade and investment between the two countries.
