ISLAMABAD: Senior police officer Adeel Akbar, serving as Superintendent of Police (SP) Industrial Area Islamabad, died by suicide on Tuesday after reportedly shooting himself in the capital’s Red Zone.
According to sources, SP Adeel Akbar was present at a security checkpoint when he received a phone call that appeared to agitate him. After ending the call, he allegedly took a weapon from his gunman and shot himself.
Police officials at the scene immediately rushed him to a nearby hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead. The Islamabad Police have not yet issued an official statement, while an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the incident is underway.
Sources revealed that Adeel Akbar had previously served in Balochistan and was an officer of the Police Service of Pakistan (PSP) from the 46th Common batch. He was known as one of the top performers of his CSS group. Originally from Gujrat, he is survived by his wife and a one-year-old daughter.
Reports suggest that SP Akbar had recently been diagnosed with dengue but continued to perform his duties despite his illness. Sources also claimed that he had been under severe stress due to a delayed promotion, as several of his batchmates had already been elevated to senior ranks last year, while his promotion was deferred to the next board.
Authorities are investigating all possible angles, including personal and professional factors, to determine the cause of the tragic incident.
