Pakistan faces internet slowdown amid suspected PEACE cable fault

KARACHI: Internet users across Pakistan faced slow browsing and connectivity disruptions on Tuesday after reports emerged of a possible fault in the PEACE submarine cable system, one of the country’s key international data routes.

According to media reports, digital expert Habibullah Khan said on social media that a “cable cut on the core system” had been detected and teams were running tests to identify the exact fault.

Several internet service providers (ISPs) notified users about degraded speeds and intermittent connections, attributing the issue to the suspected damage in the PEACE cable.

No official confirmation has yet been issued by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) or PEACE Cable management. The incident also coincided with lingering effects of a global Amazon Web Services (AWS) outage, adding to connectivity challenges for users.

The PEACE Cable, operational since 2022, links Pakistan to Europe and Africa through a high-capacity undersea route and serves as a vital component of the country’s international bandwidth.

Authorities and ISPs are monitoring the situation, with users advised to expect slower international traffic until services are fully restored.
