Maryam says Punjab’s development should not irk others

FAISALABAD: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Monday said she welcomed development initiatives in other provinces but insisted that those criticising Punjab must first deliver something themselves.

Addressing a ceremony in Faisalabad, she said Punjab’s progress should not be a source of discomfort for others. She highlighted projects completed in the province, including motorways, metro bus services, the Orange Line and road expansions.

“If Punjab speaks about constructing canals, why does it trouble you? Why object to Punjab’s initiatives?” she said, adding that when her government provided relief in electricity bills, some went to the IMF with complaints.

Maryam said Punjab had the right to use its own resources. “My water, my money — what pain does that cause anyone? Those advising Punjab should keep their advice to themselves,” she remarked. She warned that while she welcomed constructive criticism, unnecessary interference would not be tolerated.

The chief minister announced that 150 new electric buses would be introduced in Faisalabad division with a fixed fare of Rs20. She said metro bus construction in the city would begin in the coming weeks, while electric buses would also be launched in Jhang and Chiniot. Rawalpindi, she added, would soon get modern electric trains.

“Punjab is providing its people with transport comparable to Europe,” she claimed.

Maryam also criticised political opponents for promoting what she called “abusive politics” and said they were now facing the consequences of their own actions. She praised the loyalty of PML-N leaders during difficult times for Nawaz Sharif and said both Nawaz and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif would be remembered as architects of Pakistan’s development.

She further said that although all four provinces received equal shares under the NFC Award, Punjab was being unfairly criticised. “Punjab never interfered in your matters, so do not interfere in ours. Your only solution for every problem is begging-bowl politics,” she quipped.

Concluding her remarks, she vowed not to step back from defending Punjab’s rights. “I had no intention of stealing water; I only wanted to use Punjab’s water to cultivate Cholistan. When it comes to the rights of Punjab and its people, Maryam Nawaz will never step back,” she said.
