FBR denies extension in income tax return filing deadline

FBR

ISLAMABAD: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has categorically denied reports circulating on social media regarding an extension in the deadline for filing income tax returns.

In a statement issued on Monday, the tax authority described the rumours as “baseless and misleading”, noting that some individuals had even attempted to link the supposed extension to recent flood-related disruptions.

The FBR made it clear that the September 30 deadline will not be extended, and that penalties under tax laws will be imposed on defaulters who fail to comply.

The authority urged taxpayers to file their returns without delay, stating that a majority of filers reside in areas unaffected by floods and have already had ample time to fulfil their obligation.

Addressing concerns about technical hurdles, the FBR clarified that its IRIS system is fully operational, and that returns can be filed smoothly using the newly introduced simplified form.

However, the board added that in genuine hardship cases, taxpayers may seek a 15-day extension, subject to approval by the relevant committee — but only if the due tax is deposited by September 30.

Separately, the FBR has extended the deadline for filing monthly sales tax and federal excise returns for July 2025. According to a notification, taxpayers can now submit their July returns until August 26, 2025, instead of the earlier August 18, provided that the tax liability was deposited within the original deadline.
