Taliban releases American citizen Amir Amiri from detention

KABUL: Afghanistan’s Taliban government on Sunday announced the release of an American citizen, Amir Amiri, a week after a British couple were freed from detention.

The Afghan Ministry of Defense confirmed that Amiri was handed over to Adam Boehler, Washington’s special envoy on hostages. Boehler had visited Kabul earlier this month to discuss a possible prisoner exchange with Taliban authorities.

“The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan released an American citizen named Amir Amiri from prison today,” the ministry said on X. “The Afghan government does not view the issues of citizens from a political angle and makes it clear that ways can be found to resolve issues through diplomacy.”

Details surrounding Amiri’s detention remain limited, as his case has not been widely reported.

Earlier, Britons Peter Reynolds, 80, and his wife Barbie, 76, were released on September 20 after nearly eight months in a Kabul prison. The Taliban government said Qatar helped mediate both releases.
