GILGIT: The Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B) police have barred their personnel from using the social media platform TikTok in order to maintain “discipline, uniformity and the dignity of the force.”

According to a circular issued by the Office of the Inspector General of Police, no officer or official of the G-B police will be allowed to use TikTok.

“All district police officers and unit heads are directed to convey these instructions to personnel under their command,” the notification read, adding that violations would be “viewed seriously” and could lead to disciplinary action.

The decision comes amid a growing trend across the country of law enforcement agencies tightening restrictions on the social media presence of their personnel.

In July this year, Islamabad Capital Police introduced a comprehensive social media policy prohibiting officers from posting statements or opinions online without departmental approval. The policy also banned the use of official uniforms in videos or photos for personal promotion.

Earlier, in September last year, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police had also imposed a similar ban, preventing its officials from using social media platforms.

Officials said such restrictions were aimed at protecting the institutional image of the police forces.
