Jhang railway embankment breached to ease flood pressure

Jhang

JHANG: In a bid to protect population and farmland from raging floods, authorities on Friday carried out controlled breaching of the Jhang Chand railway embankment at three points after consultations between the civil administration and the army.

According to officials, Pakistan Army engineering teams employed explosives to complete the operation. The first section was blown at 1:20pm, the second at 3:42pm, and the third at 4:19pm.

The breaching diverted 100,000 to 150,000 cusecs of water out of a total flow of 496,000 cusecs passing under the Jhang bridge, significantly reducing pressure on the structure and surrounding areas.

Officials said the move helped protect 25 to 30 villages, along with vast tracts of agricultural land and critical infrastructure, from inundation.

Authorities described the breaching as a crucial step to control the floodwaters and avert large-scale devastation in major towns and cities downstream.
