KARACHI: Police have registered a case against Farhan Ghani, a Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader and chairman of Chanesar Town, who is the brother of Sindh Local Government Minister Saeed Ghani, on charges of attempted murder and terrorism.

The case was lodged at the Ferozabad police station on the complaint of Hafiz Sohail, a government employee, who alleged that he was attacked while supervising underground fibre cable work on a service road off Sharea Faisal on Aug 22.

According to the FIR, around 20 to 25 men, including Farhan, Qamar Ahmed and Shakeel, arrived in three vehicles and confronted Mr Sohail, asking him to stop the excavation work and questioning whether he had official permission.

Mr Sohail told them that he had all the relevant NOCs and the work had been authorised by the concerned authorities. He alleged that the suspects then assaulted him, pointed weapons at him “with the intention to kill” and took him to a nearby petrol station office where he was tortured.

The FIR stated that a police van reached the spot during the incident, rescued Mr Sohail, and shifted him to the police station.

Police said Farhan Ghani, along with four aides, surrendered overnight and was taken into custody.

Reacting to the development, Sindh LG Minister Saeed Ghani confirmed that an altercation had taken place between his brother and the complainant. He said Mr Sohail had exercised his legal right by lodging an FIR, and that his brother and others would face the charges in court.

“They will prove their innocence before the court,” the minister said in a statement, adding that the case would proceed in accordance with law.
