ISLAMABAD: Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar on Tuesday chaired a meeting of the Cabinet Committee for the Export of Surplus Sugar, which finalised modalities for the export of 200,000 metric tonnes of sugar.

The meeting also approved the establishment of a monitoring committee to regularly review sugar prices and ensure protection of domestic consumers.

Dar directed all concerned ministries to expedite the process and complete the remaining formalities immediately.

He said the measures were aimed at supporting the sugar industry and sugarcane farmers, boosting foreign exchange earnings and ensuring that domestic consumers were protected.

The meeting was attended by the ministers for National Food Security and Climate Change, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Tariq Bajwa, secretaries of Commerce and National Food Security and Research, as well as other relevant stakeholders from federal and provincial departments.

The committee’s approval comes as the government seeks to facilitate the export of surplus sugar while maintaining oversight of domestic prices and supply.
