Two children drown in Islamabad drain amid heavy rain

Islamabad

ISLAMABAD: At least two children drowned in a drain in Ghori Town amid heavy monsoon rains, with rescuers recovering the body of one child while a search for the second continued on Sunday.

According to Capital Emergency Services, the children fell into the drain on Saturday evening. Rescue teams immediately reached the area and launched a search operation.

The body of one child was recovered, while rescuers continued efforts to locate the second child.

The incident occurred as heavy monsoon rain lashed Islamabad and Rawalpindi, causing water accumulation in low-lying areas and disrupting traffic.

Several areas of Islamabad, including G-6 and Chatta Bakhtawar, were inundated, while rainwater also entered homes in parts of Chatta Bakhtawar and Sector C of PWD.

In Rawalpindi, water accumulated on Jamia Masjid Road and Imambara Road, affecting traffic movement.

The water level in Nullah Lai reached 19 feet at Katarian, prompting authorities to issue an alert for residential areas along the waterway.

A rain emergency was declared in Rawalpindi, with WASA teams and heavy machinery deployed at vulnerable locations.

Islamabad administration teams also carried out dewatering operations and monitored low-lying areas and nullahs. Pumps were deployed to remove accumulated rainwater.

Authorities advised residents, particularly those living near drains and in low-lying areas, to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rainfall.

Saidpur recorded the highest rainfall in Rawalpindi at 85 millimetres, followed by Golra with 75mm, Shamsabad 65mm, Pirwadhai 64mm, Gawalmandi 62mm and Bokra 50mm.
