PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Assembly on Monday approved amendments to the Public Service Commission (PSC) Ordinance 2018, reducing the governor’s role in the appointment and administrative affairs of the commission.
The PSC Amendment Act 2026 was passed after Provincial Law Minister Aftab Alam presented the bill in the assembly.
Under the amended law, the provincial government will determine the number of commission members, staff strength and their privileges. The chairman of the Public Service Commission will be appointed by the governor on the advice of the chief minister.
The legislation also provides that the commission will submit its annual performance report to the provincial government instead of the governor.
Similarly, the report will be presented before the provincial assembly by the government rather than the governor.
The amendments further empower the provincial government to frame rules and regulations governing the commission.
According to the legislation, the amendments will come into force immediately following the issuance of an official notification.
The bill also states that the provincial government will recommend suitable names for the chairman and members of the search committee.
During the same session, the KP Assembly unanimously approved the Local Government Amendment Bill 2026, presented by lawmaker Dawood Shah.
Under the new legislation, each village council and neighbourhood council will comprise a population ranging from 30,000 to 40,000 people.
The bill further provides that constituency boundaries for local governments will be determined in accordance with the 2023 digital census.
